In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

A Leap of Faith
I thought it was interesting in class when we talked about in order to truly have faith one must see that it is not ethical and not universally applicable. One must risk their own faith in order to have faith. This relates to the leap of faith. When two people are in love they take this leap of faith to be with each other. They do not know if it will work out in the end, there is no evidence to support this matter. One must doubt this faith in order to have the truest faith. To recognize this doubt allows one to take this leap of faith. We hear the phrase "leap of faith" all the time but before this the phrase meant very little to me. I understand now all that comes with a leap of faith, the doubting and the weighing of options. Once the leap has been made one has made a commitment to oneself.
