Minorities

Today in class we talked about the category that women have been placed into as a minority. Professor Layne mentioned how is Shakespere were to have a sister, with the same knowledge and brilliance she would be condemned to hanging herself due to the ignorance of the man at the time. Her writing would not be read or given any chance of prosperity. Men and women during this time period were on completely different playing fields and it would remain that way for many centuries to come. Looking from a modern perspective, and seeing all the movements and women's rights over the last hundred years you see the idea that women's idea's, writings, and concepts were not acknowledged as being absurd. It is hard to believe that just because someone has a different figure or structure that there ideas, how ever revolutionary or brilliant they might be would be ignored.

  1. This is very true. However, we also have to recognize the fact that we aren't all the way there sort of speak. We also spoke about how we still walk into book stores and see womens literature. Why do we still have labels like that? Does it matter if the author is masculine or feminine? No! The fact that we live in a society that claims not being sexist or racist and that has these labels is what is absurd. This has to change.

  2. I also agree, there is not one thing that automatically makes a man masculine and a female feminine. The fact that they have woman on the media like "Daisy of Love", is just damaging the reputation of women after they have worked so hard to get where they are.
