In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

In class we brought up Karl Marx and the idea of communism. In my freshman seminar class I am enrolled in called Making of The Atomic Bomb we are learning about the conflict between the United States and The Soviet Union, communism playing a major role in this conflict. The idea of communism is constantly referred to as the devils regime and many other slanderous terms, but it really isn't nearly that bad. I understand the fear that was instilled in many Americans, civilians or politicians, due to the drastic following of the communist movement, but the idea of communism could be very beneficial to many nations and countries around the globe. Many countries have a very large gap between the rich and the poor which is just growing and growing. The poor have nothing and the rich have everything which leads to a very corrupt and unstable government. In many areas like this if they would be able to gain some control and stability of the country, institute public works projects funded by much money of the upper class, decrease the gap between the rich in the poor and let the people be involved more it would make an extreme benefit to many of these countries.
