just stop watching

After talking about feminism in class i couldn't help but think about the media and television and how they have objectified women relentlessly over the years. Even more frustrating is the women that are allowing themselves to be put out in front of millions of viewers to be seen as entertainment. I think about shows like "Keeping up with the Kardashians" or any other mindless reality television show that follows the life of a "celebrity." Or even shows like the "bachelor" or the "real world." They all portray images of women allowing themselves to be used and desired for surface reasons. We are finally in a time where a woman can achieve great things, yet we are still supporting a media that could care less what a woman is thinking as long as she is wearing the right clothing. I just feel like some things will never change if we as women or furthermore as people don't begin to open our eyes and turn away from things that superficially label us.

  1. This reminds me of an episode of The Real World. One of the roommates, Adam, was "hooking up" with various different girls, including one who lived in the house. In that very same episode, they showed a clip of him talking to his girlfriend over the phone. He ended the conversation with, "Don't talk to any guys," to which his girlfriend responded, "I won't." I couldn't believe the hypocrisy I was seeing. Too often men go from woman to woman, one night stand to one night stand. His friends congratulate him, and he's proud of the notches on his belt. No amount of meaningless hook ups is too much. However, if a woman were to sleep with 3 or 4 men, men call her a whore. It's amazing how promiscuity is only seen as a bad thing if you're a woman; but if you're a man, it's something to be celebrated.
