In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Sweet Child
"Without knowledge, then life is not worth knowing." Socrates may have been a very intelligent man, but I have to admit I disagree with his bold statement. What exactly is knowledge? And with that knowledge, when have you reached the point to where you have learned "enough?" When I was in High school I used to help out at a local soup kitchen for service hours. There, there was a homeless man that was a regular and always called me "sweet child" as he asked how my day was and for an extra roll. He had missing teeth and dirty clothes, but would still flash me the biggest smile. This man, as happy and humble as ever, is his life not worth living? Someone that has not been educated more than high school, if that much, can't even afford dinner, but despite his troubles he is still carrying himself with the dignity and confidence that most educated people lack. Is his life not worth living?
