In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

God
The idea of god is such and abstract and bizarre idea, especially with all of the godly like imagery that we have given it. The picture of a giant bearded Zuess type looking figure in the sky, towering over the clouds and holding a lighting bolt in his hand. This of course is impossible and we can prove or disprove the idea of a greater being that created all that we live on today, but there is a greater picture that god or religion plays in our lives. The ability for us to make rational decision, having this control to resist what we want when we see it, for the ability to achieve are greater wants in the long run is what differs us from animals. We are able to make rational decisions for are greater good, but what inspires us to make these decisions. If we can steal and get away with it why not, and this is why their is a god. It is a compelling force that motivates us to do right, even when it is not for our better interest.
