In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Context
I believe the context in which people are raised affects them throughout their life. It raises the question if Aristotle grew up poor and in a generally deplorable environment would he say the habits we develop early are nearly impossible to break? If his vegetative desire was always overwhelming would the harmony between the rational and irrational be so relevant? If he were not raised as an aristocrat would he be calling for societal harmony? If he were a Black man in America what would he say? Context is one of the most important factors in any argument, and sometimes I feel that in the course of academia we fail to take into account daily life, which frankly, played a big role in determining the philosophers beliefs.
