Happiness is not the end. I do give Aristotle credit because he proves many valid points like happiness is the final goal in life to reach, but what if you reach happiness and then loose it? If being wealthy is your happiness, what if you loose all your money? This creates a peak of happiness which can occur over and over again. A sick man can get better and be happy but then get sick and not be so happy. I think happiness is determined by a variety of virtues, but none that are necessarily thought up. I think society and our friends and family have a lot to dot with our happiness and what we see will make us happy.
In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.
