In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Pleasure is Awesome
By only succumbing to our natural and necessary desires we are chipping away at what makes us human. Yes, rational thinking is a factor but unnecessary pleasure it what separates us from devouring flesh like a beast. To cast this away would be very sad and a waste. Indulging in pleasure should not be the supreme goal of anyone, but neither should removing all pleasure. There should be an askesis of desire, but not according to epicurean standards.
