In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

The Mean
In our discussion of Aristotle's ethics we examined the idea of the balance between the extreme and the deficient. I thought it was interesting how in mathematics the mean is the average or the middle of a set of numbers and in philosophy the mean is defined as acting in the right way for the right reasons with the right feeling at the right time. It is the middle or average between the extreme and the deficient. They both mirror each other.
