In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

John P. Sartre
I never thought of human being's existence as preceding essence, nor have I though of human beings as essence preceding existence. Its crazy how it all depends on your own beliefs; apparently everything in life seems to tie into "one's own beliefs". It is all based on whether or not you are one of the atheistic existentialism or theistic existentialism. To be of the atheistic, is to believe that existence precedes essence versus theist who believe essence precedes existence. The atheist cut God from all things leaving them undetermined by him. They have the freedom to be whatever they please therefore existence without an identity. In contrast to the theistic who are very well determined by God and follow his guidelines giving them purpose and identity.

You need a car before you can put gas into it to make it run. Gas in French is 'essence'. Likewise, you need an existential belief-system before you can make your essential belief 'run'.
