To define true happiness, one needs to define what makes happiness. To each person, this definition varies. Happiness can be earning more money each year or improving one’s health. One person’s happiness can be another’s pain. The average person would associate happiness to something that makes them feel good. It could also be something that they were taught would make them happy. Then again, is taught happiness true happiness? Or is happiness something everyone, regardless of culture or teachings, wants to reach in their life?
In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.
