In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Bachelor?
Friday we were discussing different branches of Philosophy and when Dr. Lanye starting talking about Epistemology and talked about the example of how all unmarried men are bachelors, I started thinking about how you know a guy is a bachelor on the fact that he has no ring on his hand, but there are guys who don't wear rings on their hand because, like my Dad the mechanic, it gets in the way of work and could get destroyed. Since he doesn't wear a ring, but is married to my mom, is he a bachelor? This whole class I asked myself why. Why is it that people have decided that to show a bond to someone that they have to wear a ring and that if they don't wear a ring they are not bond to anyone? Why a ring instead of a tattoo? You'd be marked until death like in the vows. I just keopt wondering the point of having some band around your finger to show the world that you were not a bachelor and without one you were a bachelor.
