In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Fallacies
In class on friday we talked about some common fallacies. I remember in high school learning about different fallacies. The appeal to tradition fallacy has always been interesting to me, how if a product is has new written on it it must be better. Or it can be looked at if something is a tradition then that is the way it should be. People tend to stick with what has always been and follow traditions because this seems to be the right thing to do. People do not want to try new things. The example given in class was people tend to eat more ice cream in the summer and the rape rate goes up in the summer; therefore, ice cream causes more rape. Obviously, that is ridiculous and in no way ice cream could cause rape. There are so many common fallacies that people tend to follow, its interesting learning about them and realizing how many people follow them.
