In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Could the answer not be both?
After class on Wednesday, I started thinking. I know scary right? Anyways, Dr. Layne talked about Cosmology- origin of the universe, Teleology-life having meaning, Theology-God exists, and Ontology-what can we say exists. On Friday, she talked about arguments and how they are not used for stating religious views. Yet, they kind of are. I started thinking about Theology and Cosmology. Scientists use, you guessed it, science to say that God didn't create the universe, the Big Bang happened (here is when Dr. Layne asked where did the Big Bang come from) and religious authorities, who believe wholeheartedly that God created Earth, argue back to them with scriptures that prove God created all things. Well, could both be right? Maybe God created the Big Bang which created the Earth. I just got to thinking about this after Wednesday's class and then again after Friday's class. I think this is plausible because like Dr. Layne said, if the Big Bang created the Earth and therefore, everything else then, where did the Big Bang come from?

Can the religious authorities use their own scripture as proof of anything, when it is directly refuted with just another religious scripture? It seems that religions have been made by humans to answer questions that they could not answer. The Greeks had scripture to prove the reason for all natural occurrences on earth.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, I do not believe that someone can use any writings as proof, when it is suggested that those writings are not to be taken literally.
