In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

In class on wednesday we talked about the relationship between water and the cosmos, and how Thales, one of the first philosophers, believes that water is the origin and the foundation of everything. It could be for many reasons, such as we are almost entirely made up of water, that the earth is covered by a majority of water, or that water absorbs and adapts to any form or shape. It is almost without question that water is the sole purpose for the flourishing and increasing population of humanity, but is it truly the origin of everything, all mater and all things existing on this earth? One of the major fundamentals of water is that it can never be created or destroyed it only changes forms. This ties in deeply to Thales concept of the soul inside the body. That we can absorb ideas and its molds are minds just like water, and when we perish our souls are maintained and become part of the great cosmos consisting of everything.
