In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Music will change you!
This weekend I picked a book of Nick Cave interviews which chronicles his career as a singer and writer. In one of the interviews, Nick Cave was asked whether or not he felt what he did was worthwhile. His reply was this : I found what music did for me, which was that it had the potential which the other forms don't have which is to utterly change you from the moment you put on the song - within minutes you can be a changed person, your whole body chemistry can change, your mood, your perspective. Music is like philosophy only more condensed. Philosophy can definitely change you as a person, and depending on what you read, can greatly alter your mood, chemistry, and perspective but the effects are not as immediate as music.
