Concerning Utilitarianism
One must assume the general population has an idea of what is acceptable for society. For concerning a matter that is questionable, a false belief can hinder and in some cases destroy a society. For several hundred years, slavery was viewed as acceptable and was fought to be upheld. This is an example of the negative outcomes when rules are made based on the happiness of the whole. Conversely, when the masses of Black people rose and changed the doctrine, it was clear the fine line between between moral degeneracy and societal cohesion that marks each society. Utilitarianism has its faults and benefits, however, that is what should not be questioned. The virtues from which society lives must be determined for they can make the difference in enslavement and physical freedom. Essentially the two work hand in hand in and explain one another.
