In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

"The Earth is Flat"
I have been thinking a lot about what we discussed in class involving Mill's Liberty. I thought the part about how invalid thoughts must also be heard was very intriguing. I hadn't really thought much about it before, but the point Dr. Layne made in class about listing to all opinions, even if they are blatantly wrong, to make your own arguments stronger integral to belief of anything.

This has been something that has been hard for me to accept. It's natural to just shut down when others opinions differ from your own. I think by taking this class, and learning that to strengthen an argument one must be aware of the other views, it has sharpened my argumentative skills.
