Wed. lecture and a question to be thinking about

First thanks to Alexis for already jumping in and blogging on Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - great clip. This shows initiative and it is also a great example of a good blog. So keep up the good work!

Second let's review a little. In today's class we touched on various issues from the reflective nature of the question "What is philosophy" to the very origins of all questions. I discussed how the question reflects a kind of "serious play" between knowing and not-knowing. I argued that many people walk around secure in their habits, their conceits to knowledge, or if they admit ignorance about the world and existence they often do not care to do anything about said ignorance. It is better to simply be practical and dismiss such perplexities. In contrast I emphasized the need to marry your admittance of ignorance with a corresponding work of questioning or searching for the wisdom or truth.

For next time I want you to be doing your own research about the discipline of philosophy. Come prepared to talk about the various sub-disciplines in philosophy. That is when you wikipedia "philosophy" look at the subtopics like "metaphysics" and see if you can at least see the differences between these areas.

See you Friday,
Dr. Layne
