In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Considering an Argument
It is generally accepted that a hamburger patty is one that sits between a bun and usually is round, but in the rare case it may be square. If you take that patty and define what it is before it’s cooked it can be said that its ground meat, and if u follow the chain it eventually is a cow. Therefore, one can make the point that all hamburger patties are cows. The premises’ are true while the conclusion is semi-true. However, there is also the recent phenomenon of the turkey burger. If you follow the same stripping down you eventually arrive at a bird. Now a bird is very different from a cow so how can all patties be cows? If that logic can be applied to a hamburger, maybe what we see every day is a product five steps removed from the actual truth. It was the breakdown of an argument that made me think of what if everything we ‘see’ is not real. Just a thought.
