In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

The subject of Philosophy
In class this week I had my first real exposure to the subject of Philosophy, and all that it entails. Before this all I really knew about Philosophy was the general concept of what is write and what is wrong, and the occasional hollywood notion in some movie such as 300, or Alexander The Great. During this week one thing that really stuck out to me was the idea that once something that has been debated or discussed can develop a definite or concrete answer, it no longer falls under the realm of philosophy. This really intrigued me because a subject being able to jump from one category to another doesn't usually happen very often. This also intrigued me because it made me think about how few things actually have concrete and definite answers. In class Dr. Layne asks us a question about what is color. At first I instantly thought oo thats easy a color is just what something looks like, a shade of light, different pigments, but when you really think about it, what happens when you take the color out of something, does it still exist, can you see it, it really makes you think. That concept really stuck in the back of my head and has been very thought provoking at some of the most random times.
