In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Meaning of life?
Recently I have been playing a game called Minecraft. In the game you run around the world building houses out of materials you mine just to survive to the next day. The catch to this game is that there is no purpose and no way to win, so why do we play? Life could be viewed in the same way, as a journey without a goal, but we still choose to live. Is the purpose of life to just survive to the next day or something more?
