Ignorance and Glenn Beck

During Wednesday's discussion of ignorance and its various types I immediately thought of Glenn Beck. He was fresh on my mind because I recently viewed a video on the Huffington Post, where Joe Scarborough condemns Beck for his most recent statements. I'm not a fan of Joe Scarborough but his word's regarding Beck's antics impressed me. Glenn Beck is notorious for making outlandish statements and getting facts wrong on his show. He preaches these "facts" and stands in front of his chalk board drawing connections with no basis. The ignorance I believe Beck is guilty of is Double Ignorance, or believing you know when you do not, acting purely on conceit. Scarborough touched on Beck's recent statements about Barack Obama. Beck said, "This president I think has exposed himself over and over again as a guy who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture...I'm not saying that he doesn't like white people I'm saying he has a problem. This guy is, I believe, a racist." This quote is a perfect example of how Beck contradicts himself constantly. I also believe this is evidence of his conceited ignorance. He does not back down from what he says, however wrong it may be. I'm all for freedom of speech but when someone is constantly spewing hateful rhetoric that most of all has no solid foundation people are bound to act out violently, I say this in reference to the Arizona shooting of congress woman Gabrielle Gifford.

On another note: We discussed that philosophy is not Art, but I can see how music makes connections to philosophy frequently, and isn't music a form of art?

  2. I have seen his show a few times and I understand some of what you are saying; however, in the shows I have seen he also says, "Do not take my word for it, I want you to do your own research and come to your own conclusions." I can admit that he has said some very controversial things, but he has also said some good things. I also pose a show called "Parker Spitzer" that runs on CNN. Eliot Spitzer was caught in a prostitution ring scandal, where he was caught by wire tap soliciting prostitutes. This occurred on March 11th, 2008. He now has his own show on CNN. Both sides of the coin (conservative, liberal) have many issues, it is unfair to only speak of one side. Glenn Beck has said some outrageous things on TV, but then again so has Eliot Spitzer. It would be an unfair argument to make by only mentioning one side of the argument without representing the other. There are always people on one side that are a little outrageous, but it does not represent the entire group, in this case party. Glenn Beck does not represent the entirety of the Republican party, and Eliot Spitzer does not represent the entirety of the Democratic party.
