In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Hunger?
After the discussion about metaphysics, more specific what is the purpose of life, I began to develop the idea that humans are hungry. This is not merely a hunger for food but for everything including sex, power, wealth, and knowledge. Mundane jobs are worked to buy useless junk. It seems each cultural institution we arrive at only teaches us to better fulfill a hunger that can never be filled. It seems as if we wake up everyday to feed our hunger until the next day. In America this hunger has developed in to sheer greed for every thing. Americans love instant gratification and will exploit anyone, including its own people, to feed the collective cultural hunger. It is amazing that we are engulfed by this need to have any and every thing. One must ask, why are we so hungry and why in America is it particularly ravenous? For now I guess you can only say the purpose of life is to be a feeding ground for the most abundant parasite, hunger.
