In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

Entering the World of Philosophy
Although we have only been in this class, I feel like Philosophy has already had an impact on my life. I find myself questioning why things are the way they are when before I was never curious enough to pursue such questions. Before class Wednesday, I was doing my personal research on the branches of philosophy. In the branch of metaphysics there's the problem of the mind and body and how they interact with one another. This is a problem that is also present in the field of Psychology, which is my major. Psychology also adds in the question of where the brain fits in; whether the brain and mind are the same or is the brain a part of the body or a separate entity. Before college I was under the impression that mind and brain were one and also a part of the body. After, taking neuroscience and starting this class, I have came believe the mind and body are separate, but they interact to impact your behaviors which is the idea of interactionism supported by Descartes. Only problem with what I believe about the mind and body is how are they separate when they are attached in some way. Of course this is a philosophical question so it can't be answered, but I found it interesting to think about it.
