"Clash of the Titans" 2010

This evening a couple friends and myself were watching the 2010 version of "Clash of the Titans" and I started thinking. Satre said that man was responsible for themselves and makes their own choices. Well, Perseus in "Clash of the Titans" seemed to show that. He chose not to immediately take the sword Zeus gifted him with because he wanted to defeat Hades as a man, not demi-god. IN the end, he still makes his own decisions by not going with Zeus to MPOunt Olympus and becoming a God with his father. I just thought that this was an interesting thought about man making their own decisons based on what they want and not the confines of family or anything else.

3 Stages. One For You.

After talking about the three Stages of Life, I was wondering how any one person can be in just one stage. How does that work? I don't even know which stage I belong in, but I do believe I do not belong in the Religious one. Is there some kind of test one can take to see which one they "supposedly" fit into? I think it would be interesting to find out.

Inheritance

Friday in class we briefly discussed Marx's idea of inheritance. Well, I like it. I mean for the middle class his idea of completely eliminating it is not all that great, but for the rich people this works. Is it truly fair that people like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie to just get everything handed to them? I mean Paris went to jail for a day when she should have been in there for three weeks and found God! It's all for publicity and to make sure people know that she has a Dad that is wealthy and will be leaving her a huge inheritance. It's not right. College kids, like a few of us I believe, are working three jobs while going to school full time. How does that make sense? Young adults who actually do something to benefit the world are struggling to make ends meet, but stupid rich kids who sit around tanning are alright? Dr. Layne commented how in the Europeans, the government taxes inheritances. Well, why do we do that?

The Idea of Justice

I think the idea of justice is a bit confusing for me. Some say it's good, some say it's bad. What I want to know is, who does it benefit? I don't believe justice benefits anyone anymore. Just like everything else, it's become politics. The Death penalty for example. Some states have it, some do not. Whatever happened to an eye for an eye? If someone kills your child, should they not be euthanized instead of put in a mental hospital? People give the argument that killing another person goes against the unalienable right to Life. Well, the person who killed your child certainly went against that, why can't the government do the same?

God, Why Did You Do that?

With all the talk about whether or not God exists, I have been thinking. If he/she/it is real then why is there war? Why are there mentally/physically challenged people? The existence of something above us is quite mindblowing. It does call into question on whether God is a person, whether he/she/it is with or without human qualities, is there a beard or sandals, and many more just like in class. I just thought I would bring up the fact that there are imperfect people in the world. They bring up another question. If God made us in his/her/its image, why then are there people who are handicapped or power hungry and what does it say about God's image?

Sex and the City 2!

When Dr. Layne was talking about the different types of arguments, I immediately thought of Sex and the City 2 when Samantha and the girls have to hide from the public after her bag is ripped open and condoms come flying out. Sex and the City 2 came into my mind right after Dr. Layne explained the argument type: appeal to force. The people of Abu Dhabi start shouting at her and forcing upon her their beleifs of not showing things like condoms in public. The people of Abu Dhabi did not care that Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte were Americans. All they cared about were their ideas of modesty and that everyone else was wrong.

Could the answer not be both?

After class on Wednesday, I started thinking. I know scary right? Anyways, Dr. Layne talked about Cosmology- origin of the universe, Teleology-life having meaning, Theology-God exists, and Ontology-what can we say exists. On Friday, she talked about arguments and how they are not used for stating religious views. Yet, they kind of are. I started thinking about Theology and Cosmology. Scientists use, you guessed it, science to say that God didn't create the universe, the Big Bang happened (here is when Dr. Layne asked where did the Big Bang come from) and religious authorities, who believe wholeheartedly that God created Earth, argue back to them with scriptures that prove God created all things. Well, could both be right? Maybe God created the Big Bang which created the Earth. I just got to thinking about this after Wednesday's class and then again after Friday's class. I think this is plausible because like Dr. Layne said, if the Big Bang created the Earth and therefore, everything else then, where did the Big Bang come from?
