In this class we will ask ‘what is philosophy?’ in the hopes of defending the importance of this discipline for the individual and society. In this endeavor we shall trek through the history of philosophy while unpacking some of the major issues and problems in metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic and politics. Furthermore we will address the perennial problems of the good life, personal identity, authenticity and social responsibility.

We all philosophize
Before this class I didn't think or care too much about philosophy as a study. Not to say that I've got a case of "simple ignorance," I've reflected upon things that could be defined as philosophical. Now that I have to take this class and dive deeper into this subject that's played such a small role in my life, I realize that philosophy is a pursuit that we as humans encounter more often than we think. Most everyone stumbles upon philosophy at one point or another in their lives whether it be asking yourself how we came into existence, what our purpose in life is, or discussing problems in society. Would it be reasonable then to say that everybody is a philosopher? Plenty of people sit around all day and complain about the people around them, the government, and all different different facets of society. On the outside you could call it griping but if people are recognizing and discussing social problems then that could be considered philosophizing in a way. Searching for meaning in religion is another philosophical pursuit that most everyone encounters at one point or another in their lives. In the long run, we all search for meaning in something that's significant to us. Whether it be religion, art, music, or social commentary, we all philosophize once in a while.
